The exhibition site of the Museum of the Hungarian Prison Service as the only Prison Museum of Hungary was opened on 6th March 2007. The displayed objects, pictures, and pieces of information illustrate the development of the punishment “imprisonment” and its characteristics today, as well as the functioning of the contemporary prison service. The material gathered here reflects the development humanity had undergone from the use of early death sentences and corporeal punishments to the prevalence of imprisonment especially in Hungary and Europe in a nearly scientific way. The exhibition is focused on imprisonment and the related relics and written references, and knowledge of the profession’s history. The exhibition is also a memorial of the prison service, which would like to picture the responsible work of the prison employees, and the characteristics of this curious profession. In addition to getting acquainted with the aforementioned things, the exhibition can also be an active and effective way to prevent crime and crime repetition.
